Gaining Confidence Treating a Patient During and After Cancer Treatment; Therapy Assessment, Intervention and Evidence Based Outcomes

Course Description:

Improve your confidence working with patients recovering from cancer diagnosis and treatment. How to progress a patient undergoing chemo or radiation, when to encourage persistence, and when to stop.  Red flags, yellow flags and green flags for treatment will be explored. Learn what to look for in an evaluation, how to modify treatment, when to refer patient to other medical providers. Understand signs and symptoms of lymphedema, identifying axillary web syndrome and other after effects of Breast Cancer. Understand the main orthopedic issues after head and neck cancer, including the effect of complex surgeries. How to set goals and what outcome measures to use. Manual techniques mini lab for lymphatic pumping routes, when to initiate different manual treatments, and evidence based interventions including taping, cupping, IASTM (instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization) and exercise prescription. After this class, you will walk away with better strategies for evaluation and treatment of the patient with a history of cancer as well as the goal setting and outcome measures.

Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, the attendee should be able to:

  • Determine appropriate treatment interventions for the patient recovering from Cancer
  • Identify Red Flags, Yellow Flags and Green Flags for treatment through case examples.
  • How to set goals for the patient recovering from cancer
  • How to modify treatments using critical thinking and current guidelines
  • Understand current evidence regarding therapeutic treatment modalities
  • Have a basic understanding of lymphatic pumping points and the movement of lymph in the body.
  • Practice some basic interventions commonly used in this patient population.
  • Identify the best goals and outcome measures to track meaningful changes.

Tammy Demeere

Bio:

Tammy Demeere is currently a physical therapy clinical specialist for RIM in lymphedema and oncology rehab. She has 28 years of hands on experience in the manual therapy realm and 15 years of experience specializing in lymphedema and oncology . Tammy is passionate about sharing the knowledge she continuously expands upon by working with students at Wayne State and by teaching continuing education courses. Tammy believes we all need more knowledge and experience working with this patient population as they are living longer with better treatments and need our help to get back to living their lives to the fullest extent.
